AD1

India vs Pakistan, 19th Match, Group A - LiveToday 2024

When: India vs Pakistan, June 09, 10:30 AM Local, 8 PM IST

Where: Nassau County International Cricket Stadium, New York

What to expect: A high-octane contest with passions running high on the field and in the stands. While India - with a better batting line-up - are the favourites, but in an India-Pakistan match, reputation, form and track record has little meaning. With the pitch assisting the fast bowlers, it is unlikely to be a high-scoring game but will nevertheless be a keenly contested one.

Head to Head: India lead 6-1 in their seven T20 World Cup meetings against Pakistan. Each of the last five T20 WC games between the two have been won by chasing teams.

Team Watch

India

Injuries/unavailability: The Rohit Sharma-Rahul Dravid duo is not expected to go in for any change in the four-pronged pace attack. One change that can cross their mind is bringing in Kuldeep Yadav, who has an impressive record against Pakistan, in place of Axar Patel. But then that is a long shot.

Tactics & Matchups: Rizwan and Babar's vulnerability against left-arm spin is no secret. The duo strikes at only 116 and 107.2 against the ilk, respectively, and have lost their wickets to left-arm spinners 7 and 6 times, respectively, in all T20Is. India could be tempted to throw the new ball to Axar Patel for an over to two for an early breakthrough.

Probable XI: Rohit Sharma (c), Virat Kohli, Rishabh Pant, Suryakumar Yadav, Shivam Dube, Hardik Pandya, Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel, Jasprit Bumrah, Arshdeep Singh and Mohammed Siraj

Pakistan

Injuries/Unavailability: Coach Gary Kirsten, in India till recently, knows the Indian cricketers inside out and he may draw a plan on how to break the Indian hegemony over their arch-rivals. He is well known to inspire teams and Pakistan, at a low after losing to minnows US in the first game, will look to him for inspiration. Although an important member of the side, Shadab Khan's spot might be under scrutiny as there is not much assistance for the spinners in the wicket. If they are to strengthen their batting, then top order bat Saim Ayub may be an option.

Tactics & Matchups: Indian openers Rohit (SR: 121.21) and Kohli (SR: 103.10) have been dismissed 13 and 4 times, respectively, by left-arm seamers in the PowerPlays in T20Is since 2016, making their match-up against Afridi and Amir one to watch-out for.

Probable XI: Babar Azam (C), Mohammad Rizwan (wk), Usman Khan, Fakhar Zaman, Azam Khan, Iftikhar Ahmed, Shadab Khan/Saim Ayub, Shaheen Afridi, Naseem Shah, Mohammad Amir, Haris Rauf

Did you know?

-Kohli has won four POTM awards in India vs Pakistan T20Is - the most by any player. No other players has more than one

- Mohammad Rizwan will be playing his 100th T20I

- Iftikhar Ahmed needs 7 runs to complete 1000 in the shortest format

- Haris Rauf is 4 away from completing 100 T20I wickets

Australia vs England, 17th Match, Group B - Live

When: Saturday, June 8 at 1:00 PM Local time (10:30 PM IST, 5:00 PM GMT)

Where: Kensington Oval, Bridgetown, Barbados

What to expect: In the four matches hosted by Barbados so far in this World Cup, including the abandoned England-Scotland game, Australia's 164 against Oman is the highest first innings total. In the previous game, Scotland went past Namibia's total of 155 in 18.3 overs. A total of 170-180 could turn out to be a winning total at this venue. Rain is forecast in the morning and around the match time.

Head to head: England 11 - 10 Australia. England have an advantage over Australia in T20 World Cups as well, having won two out of three, with their last encounter in 2022 getting washed out.

Teams watch

Australia

Injury/availability: Mitchell Starc suffered cramps during the game against Oman and walked off the field after bowling three overs. But the left-arm pacer participated in the net session ahead of the match. Pat Cummins might get a look in if they are looking to rest Starc, or keep both of them and leave out Nathan Ellis.

Tactics & Matchups: Among the Australian bowlers in the current squad, Marcus Stoinis, Pat Cummins and Nathan Ellis have kept Jos Buttler quiet, with the batter having strike rates of 87.5, 114.7 and 114.3 against them respectively and has been dismissed once each. With England's batting order comprising right-handers in their top six, the inclusion of Ashton Agar could serve Australia well.

Probable XI: David Warner, Travis Head, Mitchell Marsh (c), Glenn Maxwell, Marcus Stoinis, Tim David, Matthew Wade (wk), Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins, Adam Zampa, Josh Hazlewood

England

Injury/availability: England do not have any injury concerns at the moment.

Tactics & Matchups:

Jofra Archer has dismissed David Warner twice in 12 deliveries for only 12 runs. Chris Jordan has dismissed Glenn Maxwell thrice in 32 deliveries while Adil Rashid, with three dismissals in 32 balls, is a good matchup against Marcus Stoinis. Rashid has also accounted for Maxwell twice but has gone for 72 runs off 47 balls. Mark Wood has also dismissed Stoinis twice in 29 balls.

Probable XI: Jos Buttler (c & wk), Philip Salt, Will Jacks, Jonny Bairstow, Harry Brook, Moeen Ali, Liam Livingstone, Chris Jordan, Jofra Archer, Adil Rashid, Mark Wood

Did you know?

- Jos Buttler (3), Phil Salt (5), Will Jacks (3) and Harry Brook (3) have collectively been dismissed 14 times by left-arm spin

- Jos Buttler has scored 542 runs in 15 innings against Australia, with five 50-plus scores. Buttler last eight scores vs Australia: 46, 61, 44, 77*, 71*, 68, 17 & 65

- Marcus Stoinis has scored 627 runs at an average of 31.35 and a strike rate of 140.26, and has picked up 22 wickets at 17.31 with an economy of 8.28 in T20s in 2024

Squads:

Where: Grand Prairie Stadium, Dallas

Team Watch

Sri Lanka

Even though Sri Lanka wouldn't want to make radical changes, bringing in Dhananjaya de Silva in place of Kamindu Mendis to lend some stability wouldn't be a bad idea.

Tactics & Matchups: Sri Lanka would ideally want Charith Asalanka to be batting at the death given his excellent record against Mustafizur Rahman. He strikes at 172 against the left-arm seamer and has never been dismissed by him.

Probable XI: Kusal Mendis (wk), Pathum Nissanka, Dhananjaya de Silva, Sadeera Samarawickrama, Charith Asalanka, Angelo Mathews, Dasun Shanaka, Wanindu Hasaranga (c), Maheesh Theekshana, Matheesha Pathirana, Nuwan Thushara

Bangladesh

There have been question marks over Litton Das' form heading into the tournament. But Bangladesh might still look to give him an extended run. Shoriful Islam's fitness remains a huge concern as he races against time to play this fixture.

Tactics & Matchups: Where can Litton Das bat, especially after the century stand between Tanzid and Soumya in the final T20I against the USA? Angelo Mathews bowled with the new ball for Sri Lanka the other day against South Africa and he has an excellent record against Litton in this format.

Probable XI: Tanzid Hasan, Soumya Sarkar, Litton Das (wk), Najmul Hossain, Shakib Al Hasan, Towhid Hridoy, Mahmudullah, Rishad Hossain, Tanzim Hasan Shakib, Hasan Mahmud, Mustafizur Rahman

Did you know?

- Sri Lanka have lost four out of their last five matches in the T20 World Cup.

- Shakib Al Hasan is four away from becoming the second bowler to take 150 wickets in men's T20Is after New Zealand's Tim Southee, who has 157.

What they said:

"We watched a lot of matches on television and from the morning we watched the match here. So, I think it will be better than the wicket we had in New York. But we mostly get used pitches, and there will be a challenge tomorrow. We have already discussed it, and we are well prepared for it." - Sri Lanka's batting coach Thilina Kandamby on the surface

Squads:

Bangladesh Squad: Soumya Sarkar, Litton Das(w), Najmul Hossain Shanto(c), Shakib Al Hasan, Towhid Hridoy, Mahmudullah, Rishad Hossain, Mustafizur Rahman, Shoriful Islam, Tanzim Hasan Sakib, Taskin Ahmed, Jaker Ali, Tanzid Hasan, Mahedi Hasan, Tanvir Islam

Sri Lanka Squad: Pathum Nissanka, Kusal Mendis(w), Kamindu Mendis, Wanindu Hasaranga(c), Sadeera Samarawickrama, Charith Asalanka, Angelo Mathews, Dasun Shanaka, Maheesh Theekshana, Matheesha Pathirana, Nuwan Thushara, Dilshan Madushanka, Dunith Wellalage, Dushmantha Chameera, Dhananjaya de Silva

Canada vs Ireland, 13th Match, Group A - Live

Canada vs Ireland, 13th Match, Group A - Live

When: Canada vs Ireland, June 7, 02:30 PM GMT, 10.30 AM Local, 08:00 PM IST

Where: Nassau County International Cricket Stadium, New York

What to expect: Low scores and help for the bowlers, in the air and off the surface. The ICC has taken cognisance of the pitch concerns and is actively looking to temper the pitch and it remains to be seen if it is successful in this endeavour. Players will experience pleasant temperatures of about 26 degrees Celsius and captains will look to bowl first.

Head to head: Canada 2 - 2 Ireland. Canada won the most recent clash between these sides, in 2019.

Team Watch:

Ireland

Batting coach Gary Wilson suggested Harry Tector was fine despite copping a bruising blow from a Jasprit Bumrah bouncer. Ross Adair is a potential replacement if Tector doesn't pull up well. If Ireland expect the pitch to play similar to how it did against India, they might want to drop leg spinner Ben White for an additional seamer in Craig Young.

Probable XI: Paul Stirling (c), Andy Balbirnie, Lorcan Tucker, Harry Tector, Curtis Campher, George Dockrell, Gareth Delany, Mark Adair, Barry McCarthy, Josh Little, Ben White

Canada

Canada could bring in left-arm fast bowler Rishiv Joshi for offspinner Nikhil Dutta, who conceded 41 in 2.2 overs against USA.

Probable XI: Aaron Johnson, Navneet Dhaliwal, Pargat Singh, Nicholas Kirton, Shreyas Movva (wk), Dilpreet Bajwa, Saad Bin Zafar (c), Dilon Heyliger, Rishiv Joshi, Kaleem Sana, Jeremy Gordon

Did you know?

- Ireland have won eight of their last nine men's T20Is against associate nations, with the sole loss during that period coming against Scotland by a margin of eight runs in July 2023

- Canada have lost each of their last three men's T20Is when batting first but both their wins against Ireland have come while batting first

- Saad Bin Safar has taken at least 1 wicket in 10 of his last 11 T20I bowling innings. The only innings he failed to do so was Canada's tournament opener against USA this week

What they said:

"It's tough to adjust when you don't know what you have to adjust to." - Heinrich Malan, Ireland Coach, on the uncertainty offered by the pitch at the Nassau County Cricket Ground.

"This wicket is a bit, kind of, what you can say, a tricky one. So you cannot play some of the T20 shots. So you have to play conventional cricket. And what I see, it's playing on the up, it's a little bit more difficult than Dallas." - Navneet Dhaliwal, Canada batter, on his take on the pitch.

Squads:

Canada Squad: Aaron Johnson, Navneet Dhaliwal, Pargat Singh, Nicholas Kirton, Shreyas Movva(w), Dilpreet Bajwa, Dillon Heyliger, Saad Bin Zafar(c), Nikhil Dutta, Kaleem Sana, Jeremy Gordon, Rishiv Ragav Joshi, Junaid Siddiqui, Rayyan Pathan, Ravinderpal Singh

Ireland Squad: Andrew Balbirnie, Paul Stirling(c), Lorcan Tucker(w), Harry Tector, Curtis Campher, George Dockrell, Gareth Delany, Mark Adair, Barry McCarthy, Joshua Little, Benjamin White, Graham Hume, Craig Young, Neil Rock, Ross Adair

Namibia vs Scotland, 12th Match, Group B - Live

Namibia vs Scotland, 12th Match, Group B - Live

When: Namibia vs Scotland, June 6, 11:30 PM GMT, 3 PM Local, 12:30 AM IST

Where: Kensington Oval, Bridgetown, Barbados

What to expect: The Bridgetown surface looked tough going when Namibia were batting on it against Oman, and indeed when Ruben

Trumpelmann was bowling. By contrast, Scotland openers Munsey and Jones looked remarkably comfortable against England’s attack more recently, when it seemed as though their 9-an-over opening stand might not even be enough. What to expect by game time is thus an open question, though the deck certainly seems

to have hardened up. In terms of weather things looked much-improved as well, with clear skies and temperatures touching 30C predicted by the (admittedly mercurial) forecast at time of writing. If that holds true, expect a bat-first day.

Head to Head in T20Is: 3-0

Team Watch: Namibia

Neither Jan Frylinck not JJ Smit bowled a ball against Oman, suggesting both are indeed still playing primarily as bats, or bowlers of last resort.

Tactics & Matchups: Ruben Trumpelmann versus Scotland is arguably all the match-up the Namibians need, the imposing left-arm quick, in his own words, “ broke the back” of the Scotland side in their last encounter with a similar opening spell to the one he just produced against Oman. Assuming he’s fit, JP Kotze may come in for out-of-form opener Michael van Lingen.

Probable XI: JP Kotze, Nikolaas Davin, Jan Frylinck, Gerhard Erasmus(c), Malan Kruger, JJ Smit, David Wiese, Zane Green(w), Ruben Trumpelmann, Bernard Scholtz, Tangeni Lungameni

Team Watch: Scotland

With all but two of the Scotland side not making it out of the dugout against England, it’s unsurprising they haven’t picked up any reported injuries. An unchanged eleven seems the most likely set-up.

Tactics & Matchups: Though the Scots have an underwhelming record against Namibia, there’s no clear case for a drastic shake-up of the side that faced England. Spinner Mark Watt and Michael Leask especially have done well against the Namibians across formats. On the Scottish bench young Jack Jarvis may be a tempting pick however, having done well on a recent tour to the UAE in similarly low-scoring conditions.

Probable XI: George Munsey, Michael Jones, Brandon McMullen, Richie Berrington(c), Matthew Cross(w), Michael Leask, Chris Greaves, Mark Watt, Christopher Sole, Brad Wheal, Brad Currie

Did you know?

George Munsey’s sole first class century and sole ODI ton both came against Namibia, but in T20Is he averages just 9.33 against them in three innings – his lowest amongst any of the 23 sides he has faced in the format.

What they said:

“I think all three associates in this group can give each other a go and yeah, they've got two match winners up front with the bat and with the ball as well - so we're licking our lips for a great contest and some bragging rights between the associate guys. The qualification to the Super 8 also means qualification to the next World Cup, which is also a big factor. And we are not taking this lightly. We as a team want to go forward, we want to be competitive, we've beaten members and we don't want to stop here.” - Ruben Trumpelmann

“We're coming into this tournament looking to get into that Super 8, regardless of the rest of the teams in our group. Obviously, it's something that guys look towards, but we're just taking it one game at a time. I know it's cliche, but realistically our best chance of getting into that Super 8 stage and competing and turning some big teams over is looking at tomorrow's game and then the Oman game after that. So just one game at a time, we'll take the belief in what we've done yesterday into those games.” - Brad Wheal

Squads:

Namibia Squad: Michael van Lingen, Nikolaas Davin, Jan Frylinck, Gerhard Erasmus(c), JJ Smit, David Wiese, Zane Green(w), Malan Kruger, Ruben Trumpelmann, Bernard Scholtz, Tangeni Lungameni, Ben Shikongo, Dylan Leicher, Peter-Daniel Blignaut, Jack Brassell, JP Kotze

Scotland Squad: George Munsey, Michael Jones, Brandon McMullen, Richie Berrington(c), Matthew Cross(w), Michael Leask, Chris Greaves, Mark Watt, Christopher Sole, Brad Wheal, Bradley Currie, Ollie Hairs, Safyaan Sharif, Jack Jarvis, Charlie Tear
